I Published My First Book!

Accessible American History

As the title indicates, I just published my first book! The title is “Accessible American History: Connecting the Past to the Present.” (See the end of this hub for links that will take you to where it can be purchased.) It is a collection of essays, arranged (more or less) in chronological order, which provides a general overview of American history. But it is not a generic textbook. Instead, it combines historical discussion with my personal political and social commentary as I try to connect the events and issues of the past with life in the United States today. Essentially, I try to do in this book what I have been doing for the past eleven years as a community college history instructor.

Many of these essays started as articles here on Hubpages, and if you look to the right, I have placed links to the most widely read hubs that have been included in the book. For those of you who have not read my stuff before, these are a good introduction to both my writing style and to the types of topics addressed in the book. Keep in mind, however, that these essays have been polished up a bit for the book versions, and in some cases, they have been updated in response to recent events. And the book also includes several essays that have not been previously published, along with revised versions of essays that were originally published here on Hubpages but are no longer available.

The book is available in three formats:

Electronic Formats

You can buy the book in ebook form at “Amazon.com.” or by shopping at the Kindle store on your Kindle. If you click the link to Amazon below and then click on the book cover to the left, you can read the Table of Contents and the first five essays. With your Kindle, you can also download a sample:

It is also available as an electronic book in the EPUB file format, which is the format used by all non-Kindle electronic readers. (Ipad, Nook, Sony Ereader, etc.) You can get it in this format at "lulu.com" (see link below), at the Barnes & Noble Nook Store (see link below), and at the Apple Ibooks Store. (Just search the title.)

Paperback Format

The book is also available in paperback. If you click the link below, it will take you to my book listing on "Create Space," which is a book publishing division of "Amazon." (You can also buy the paperback at "Amazon.com.") For whatever reason, I make more money when people buy from the "Create Space" page than from "Amazon." (It's the same price for you either way.) Because of printing costs, however, the ebook version is cheaper.

If you buy the book and like what you read, please tell others about it. I have a small-scale publishing operation here, so I need all of the help I can get. Thanks for reading.

I've managed to sell about 30 so far. (Although I "cheat" by selling some to my community college students.) What marketing techniques have you tried? You seem to have a ton of followers, so I would think that you could translate some of those visitors into book sales.

I should have elaborated a bit.The first was published as a free book and has about 170 downloads. The second is still in process. It has been approved by Smashwords but has not been rated yet. Promotion will be a learning experience.Another hubber just told me about something Kindle is offering that sounds promising.

Yes, you can publish through Kindle Direct Publishing. But if you publish with them, be sure to read their directions for how to format it properly. Create Space is the physical book, self-publishing division of Amazon.

You might also look into Lulu.com. If you publish with them, your book will also be listed on the Apple Ibookstore and the Barnes & Noble nook site. But once again, read their formatting directions carefully, particularly regarding how to set up a Table of Contents.

Great Freeway Flyer, I'm working on publishing my first book - scratch that, I attempted to publish my first novel (only novel), but became self-consious because of mistakes and so on. ...I'd probably be okay paying someone to do this for me, as I don't always have the time. ...anyways, this is all WIP...

John,

Mistakes are inevitable. I keep finding little things in my book, which I will probably go back someday and revise. But even then, you have to just go for it at some point.

I keep wondering if I should have paid an editor or tried to go through a publishing company. There is always the fear of getting ripped off. If nothing else, I have been able to maintain more control by going at it alone and will keep a higher percentage of whatever royalties it may generate.

So keep at it, and good luck.
